Why I Use Coconut Wax for Our Candles
Share
In case you didn't know, wax does make a huge difference for a great smelling candle. The way it looks, it burns, and smells. It's also a plus when it comes to "cleaner" candles. It was also the determining factor of why I chose to use coconut based wax.
I did try our soy wax in the past. It was......OK. I just didn't like the appearance of my candles with soy wax. Honestly, the candle looked pretty ugly after the first burn. I tried several types of soy waxes for our container candles, and between the appearance during testing and sinkholes they created after the first pour (YES, this requires a second pour to complete the candle), it was just annoying AF.Â
You must be thinking, "but you use soy wax for your skull candles!"
  Let's be clear:
It is a soy-paraffin blend to ensure a longer lasting candle.Â
Unfortunately, 100% soy based pillar candles literally only last about 5 minutes. I'd be pissed if I spent $25 on a soy candle that lasts five minutes. Hence my choice to use the soy-paraffin blend.
So in case you're wondering, here are some other reasons why coconut wax candles are definitely the better choice compared to those you see a corporate chain stores. Â
Â
1. Clean Burning = Cleaner Air
Paraffin wax is derived from petroleum, and when burned, it can release toxins like toluene and benzene into the air—yeah, the same stuff found in diesel fumes. (Having second thoughts about those chain stores candles now, huh?). Coconut wax, on the other hand, burns clean and produces minimal soot. So if you love lighting candles daily (same), coconut wax helps keep your indoor air fresher and safer.
Â
2. Longer Burn Time = More Bang for Your Buck
Coconut wax burns slower than paraffin, which means your favorite candle lasts longer. Even though I run a small business and the faster you burn through your candle, the more I get PAID....I don't like to scam people. When I used to buy factory made candles, I would get pissed when those candles lasted maybe a weekend. Call it a pet peeve of mine. So expect a Skeleton Crew Creations candle to last you a bit. Â

3. Better Scent Throw = A More Fragrant Vibe
It's why we buy candles, right? We want a nice smelling home. Coconut wax does hold fragrance pretty damn well. Sometimes just taking the cover off is enough to fill the room with the ambiance of the candle. I noticed with paraffin wax container candles they smelled amazing in the store. But as I burned it at home, it barely worked. (Kind of see my origin story going on here?)
4. Eco-Friendly & Sustainable
Coconut wax is made from the meat of coconuts—a renewable resource—and it’s biodegradable. Paraffin, on the flip side, is a byproduct of crude oil, a non-renewable fossil fuel. Choosing coconut wax is a small but meaningful step toward a more eco-conscious lifestyle.
5. Less Mess, More Aesthetic
Coconut wax has a creamy, smooth texture and tends to look beautiful in the jar. It honestly looks like super creamy hand lotion with a wick in it in my opinion. When I messed around with soy, it just had too many imperfections that got under my skin: frosting, sink holes, and that ugly grainy texture that occurs after the first burn. Paraffin can be a bit more finicky and often leaves a messier residue.
Â
Bottom Line? Coconut wax wins in health, longevity, scent, and sustainability. That’s why at Skeleton Crew Creations, I'm proud to use it in every candle I pour. Your home deserves clean vibes, safe air, and scents that last.
